In the fall of 2009, MVP launched a Commissioned Ruling Elder (formerly Commissioned Lay Pastor) Transformation Track. For those who participated it was a profound and life--changing experience. Some elders continue to serve in their own congregations; others are now pastoring congregations, while others have developed community--based ministries or are serving on a presbytery level. Given the strong response, a third cohort for Commissioned Ruling Elders will begin September 2014.
Your name has come to us as a person God might be calling to become part of the third cohort to go through the Transformation Track. We are seeking leaders who have a vibrant, growing faith in Jesus Christ who are passionate about sharing in God’s kingdom work knowing that we are called to bear God’s transforming love into the world. Should you feel God calling you to serve in this capacity, we would encourage you to apply to train as a CRE.
The commitment is a big one and the year will be intense, but life changing. The structure of the track seeks to integrate the theology of ministry with the practice of ministry. It will involve several Fridays and Saturdays and three long weekends (Friday/ Saturday), plus a three day Mission Immersion in the Pittsburgh area to see dynamic church in action. We also expect you to attend all Presbytery special training sessions and stated meetings. You will be assigned a trained mentor to guide you through the process and work as partners during the seasons of Advent and Lent. (For details, see the attached schedule.)
In order to apply for the program, you will need to complete the attached application, include a recommendation from your pastor, an endorsement from your session, and two personal references. These materials are due to the MVP office by July, 2014. Should you be accepted, you will meet with the Calling Commission, undergo a psychological evaluation, and be assigned a trained mentor.
The cost of the program is $1,500. Some financial aid is available and we encourage you to seek financial support from your congregation. Please note the change in price and also that all training will be held at the Mission Center. The Commissioned Ruling Elder ministry team and I will be holding you in prayer as your discern God’s call.
